Elisabeth Orbeliani Award for Georgian Student Translation
The President of Georgia establishes the Elisabeth Orbeliani Award for the best Georgian student translation by one of the founders and the first lecturer of Tbilisi State University, a woman, philanthropist, poet and translator, hostess of the Orbeliani Palace.
The aim of the competition is to popularize translation activities among young people and to encourage creative initiative.

Elisabeth Orbeliani Award is given in two nominations:

  • For Georgian translation of a prose work;
  • For Georgian translation of a scientific paper.

Competition conditions:

  • Students of Georgian universities can participate in the competition.
  • Georgian translation of the same work should not be published by another translator when submitting a competition paper.
  • To participate in the competition, students must submit documents and a competition translation to their university chancellery.

Stages of the competition:

At a university wishing to participate in a competition, a commission is set up by order of the rector to review the papers of students from the same university, including the best in each of the two nominations and submitting them to the Presidential Administration.

A working group is set up in the Presidential Administration, which will identify one candidate for awarding both nominations from the translations received from the universities and submit its decision to the President of Georgia for approval.

  • The President of Georgia will make a decision on awarding the nominated candidates.

Competition deadlines:

The competition will be announced on December 29, 2021.

  • Students can submit competitive translations, their originals (in any form) and documents (copy of ID card) to the University Chancellery from 7 to 18 February 2022.
  • The competition entries will be submitted to the commission set up at the University on February 21, 2022.
  • Competitive entries will be submitted to the Presidential Administration on March 14, 2022.
  • A working group set up in the Presidential Administration will identify the best translations and submit them to the President of Georgia for a final decision on April 14, 2022.
  • The award ceremony will be held on April 23 at the Orbeliani Palace.
